YLI Contributes to LEAD-Mongolia Fellowship

The University of Virginia Center for Politics to which the Youth Leadership Initiative belongs seeks to increase civic engagement both in the United States and around the globe. The Center's Global Perspectives on Democracy (GPD) program began in 2006 as a way to promote the values of civic engagement beyond the boundaries of the United States. Since its inception, YLI has contributed talent, time, and resources that strengthen and lengthen the reach of civic education.

In January and September/October of 2017, YLI provided curriculum support for GPD's LEAD-Mongolia program. These two cadres of high achieving young professionals from across Mongolia participated in two-week fellowships meant to serve as springboards for the country's next generation of leaders and democracy advocates. The sixty-seven fellowship delegates engaged in dialogues, learned from experts, and participated in site visits on a wide variety of subjects that connected with unemployment and poverty alleviation, anti-corruption and transparency, and the environment and urbanization. Delegates concluded their participation with plans to implement Civic Action Projects (CAP) upon return to Mongolia.

YLI Director of Instruction, Meg Heubeck, developed and implemented a CAP workshop series that required participants to research and create projects for the benefit of Mongolia. Daman Irby, YLI Deputy Director of Instruction and Center for Politics Director of Global Initiatives, scheduled many site visits and speakers who assisted fellows in achieving their goals. As with all YLI programs, the activities were relevant, hands-on, and pragmatic. Fellows used the skills of discourse, debate, and compromise to further develop skills to benefit their communities and nation. YLI is proud of its association with GPD and looks forward to future collaborations.
