YLI hosts Boys State film in partnership with Apple TV and A24 Entertainment

The Youth Leadership Initiative (YLI) is proud to be working with Apple TV and A24 Entertainment to provide our educators a relaxing time of entertainment and thought provoking discussion about civic engagement. On September 22, 2020, at 7 p.m. EDT, YLI educators will join together online to view Apple TV's film, Boys State, a documentary by filmmakers Jesse Moss and Amanda McBaine.

YLI Director Meg Heubeck was given a chance to preview the film and jumped at the chance to plan an event specifically for civic educators.

"This film has so much relevance to what we do as civics teachers. I laughed, I cried, I had many ah-ha moments. I found myself talking to the screen and wishing I could share the film with others but unfortunately I was alone. That's when I thought- this would make a great teacher activity."

COVID-19 has made it difficult to provide teachers a place to relax and share their feeling about their profession. YLI is hoping that an "afternoon special" such as they might have grown up with might allow space for convivial conversation about the direction of civics education, politics in America's youth, and the future of our democracy. Popcorn and comfy clothing are encouraged!

Following the viewing there will be a casual panel discussion with the film's creators moderated by Meg Heubeck. "I know after they see the film there will be many questions. Participating teachers will also have the opportunity to schedule a viewing for their students courtesy of Apple TV and A24. This is a really unique chance to use film to discuss current events. I am so thankful to Apple."
